In the small settlement of Ngawha, just outside of Kaikohe, you can bathe in hot geothermal pools as the locals have done for over a century.
Leaving the wharf behind, your small group tour (would you really want to have a hot mud pool experience with a big group of cruise passengers?) will first call at the pretty township of Kerikeri and the Stone Store Heritage area, then onto the stunning Rainbow Falls and a stop at the Makana Chocolate Factory to taste a few samples and of course shop for some gifts and indulgences. Close by is the Kauri Workshop where you will see a wide range of handcrafted wood, made entirely from New Zealand native timber – kauri, rimu, totara and pohutukawa.
Enjoy a lunch break at a winery or a riverside cafe (at your own cost) and then onto Ngawha geothermal mineral springs. Ngawha is pronounced "nah-fah" and meaning hot pool. The Maori pools of healing are renowned internationally for the soothing and healing qualities they provide to the user. These pools are a hidden treasure offering therapeutic and relaxing benefits to those who immerse themselves. There are several pools that offer different temperatures, healing benefits and therapeutic properties.
On your return to the wharf, your tour will visit the world famous Kawakawa Huntertwasser Toilets.
